Data Storage Options for Computers
Network Storage:
-
Group Drive
The G: drive is shared by everyone in a department, such as Admissions or the Registrar, and is unique to each department. Only those users within that department have access to this drive. -
Personal Drive
The U: drive is for storing your personal files. Only you have access to this drive. -
Shared Drive
The S: drive is shared by special group. Often times these groups may span multiple departments or may just include several individuals in the same department that are working on a project that they do not want the rest of the department to have access to on the G: drive.
NetStorage Web site:
NetStorage allows you to see your network drives using a Web browser instead of Windows Explorer. You can access NetStorage from any computer in the world with Internet access. Go to this URL: https://virtualoffice.lss.ku.edu/NetStorage/ and log in using your Novell username as <username>.people.ukans and your Novell password (not your KU Online ID password).
External Storage:
-
Recordable CDs (CD-R):
All new computers come with recordable CD-ROM drives. Insert a blank CD-R into your CD-ROM drive and open Roxio Easy CD Creator » Project Selector. A user-friendly wizard will walk you through creating a CD with your data. SSTS can give you a quote for blank CDs from Dell or your Office Manager can order some through a state vendor. -
USB Storage Keys:
A USB Storage Key is a small device that you insert into a USB port on your computer. A new drive letter will be automatically assigned to the USB key and you can transfer files onto it or off of it like any other drive letter. SSTS can give you a quote for a USB Key from Dell or your Office Manager can order one through a state vendor. -
E-mail:
You can e-mail files to yourself using the Microsoft Outlook Client or Outlook Web Access at https://owa.ku.edu/. DO NOT use this method to send files with sensitive student information, as normal email is not a secure medium.
